Personal characteristics of a teacher.

   In order to create an effective classroom community, I think that that a teacher must first and foremost have a passion for teaching and a love for children. Secondly, I think that they must be caring, consistent, respectful, patient and kind. At the same time, I think they should be firm and consistent. Students should be shown what the expectations are and have a clear understanding of those. I also think that strong communication is important in setting clear boundaries and expectations. Students should know that they are loved by their teacher, but that there are expectations in place. 

   I also think that teachers should flexible, engaging and have the ability to adapt to different situations that may occur suddenly at school. Having a strong cultural awareness in the classroom is a strong attribute to have as well. Classes are often very diverse, and respect is important to show to everyone. Teachers can create a safe, loving environment in their classroom by having these characteristics. Student's will have a sense of belonging and community. They will feel safe to express themselves as well as making mistakes.  I think that by creating a safe community within the classroom it will allow students to have a successful school year.

Standardized Testing

 Growing up, I remember taking the Standard Achievement test. I was always worried about how I would do. I remember always being overwhelmed and stressed. I think that contributed to my test anxiety that continued throughout my high school years. Today, as a student I still have the fear of failure.  A positive aspect of standardized testing is that it shows where students may need improvement. A negative aspect is that it does cause stress on students. When students have the anxiety of not doing well, they may not perform as well.

Challenging current trend in today's education -Social and Emotional learning

 The trend in today's educational world that I feel I will most struggle with as a teacher is social and emotional learning. Social and emotional learning has a direct impact on student's mental health. In my opinion social and emotional learning is like an umbrella. There are many different causes under the mental health umbrella. Children can suffer from genetic disorders that cause mental health issues. Some of the genetic disorders are bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ADHD, Autism, and major depression disorders. All types of abuse can cause mental health issues as well. Physical abuse, sexual abuse, drug abuse, emotional abuse, verbal abuse and neglect can all cause mental health issues in today's students.
