Challenge

As a future elementary school teacher, I feel that my biggest challenge will be ensuring that all students are prepared to move to the next grade level. I think that making sure each student is academically where they need to be, would be a big stress for a teacher. Not only do they need to be academically ready, but they also need to be socially and emotionally ready. They need to be able to handle change, their emotions and have increasing responsibility as they move up each year. Students learn in so many different ways. Some students may be very advanced while others may be behind in math, writing and reading.  Meeting the needs of every student is very important. Making sure that students have the resources they need to succeed is part of being the best teacher you can.  I really believe that a firm foundation in the early years of school is so very important. It's the foundation to the rest of the academic future. 

As a pre-service teacher, my advice to others coming into education would be to give your best every day. On the days you don't feel like showing up, do it anyways. Let the students know that you believe in them.  You may be the reason they look forward to coming to school each day. Remember the reason you wanted to become a teacher. Bury that deep in your heart and carry it with you every day.

Standardized Testing

 Growing up, I remember taking the Standard Achievement test. I was always worried about how I would do. I remember always being overwhelmed and stressed. I think that contributed to my test anxiety that continued throughout my high school years. Today, as a student I still have the fear of failure.  A positive aspect of standardized testing is that it shows where students may need improvement. A negative aspect is that it does cause stress on students. When students have the anxiety of not doing well, they may not perform as well.

Challenging current trend in today's education -Social and Emotional learning

 The trend in today's educational world that I feel I will most struggle with as a teacher is social and emotional learning. Social and emotional learning has a direct impact on student's mental health. In my opinion social and emotional learning is like an umbrella. There are many different causes under the mental health umbrella. Children can suffer from genetic disorders that cause mental health issues. Some of the genetic disorders are bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ADHD, Autism, and major depression disorders. All types of abuse can cause mental health issues as well. Physical abuse, sexual abuse, drug abuse, emotional abuse, verbal abuse and neglect can all cause mental health issues in today's students.
