Diversity in the classroom

When there is diversity in the classroom, there can be several different ways that students can be diverse. Students can differ in how they learn, their native language, race, ethnicity, gender identity, and religion. It's important to respect students as individual people with their own ideas and experiences.

Religious differences: Do your best as the student's teacher to understand the role that religion plays in their lives and honor their identity.

Gender identity: Respect your student's decisions that they make for their lives. Honor their identity.

Language: As the teacher to students with language barriers or English as a second language, you could possibly learn phrases from their native language. You could also display posters or art from their culture to show them that their culture is valued. Allow students to share their native language.

Race: Create an anti-racist classroom by validating student identities. Include classroom materials that include diverse perspectives and representation.

Ways to connect with diverse students:

  • One on one interactions to learn interests and hobbies
  • observe student's interactions and peer relationships
  • attend student's extra-curricular activities
  • be willing to learn some simple phrases of native language
  • family contact if possible

Teaching strategies to help diverse students:

  • Speak clear and slow
  • use gestures and facial expressions
  • use concrete materials and visuals
  • engage students in student centered learning
  • avoid idiomatic expressions
  • use language buddies if possible
Diverse students deserve to feel important and valued in the classroom.

  1. You present your ideas in a very clear, organized way and identify several practical strategies for supporting diverse learners. I especially like the focus on respect, representation, and intentional connection with students and families. To strengthen this further, add more personal reflection about how you will apply these ideas and what they mean to you as a future teacher.
